Based on a true legend about Charlemagne, this silent film is a fairy tale in the tradition of European magical realism. An aging king, disillusioned with worldly affairs, falls under the spell of a magic ring. Striking visuals, hypnotic music, costumes and expressionistic make-up create its eerie, theatrical world.
